Latin America and by extension Latino/a/x/e (Latine) health has flattened the idea racialization — the construction of “race” — and racism across these populations. At the crux of this line of research is centering the experiences of Afro-descendents in Latin America and the Caribbean, including Latines in public health research and policy. To do this work, we must shift our research away the systematic exclusion of the existence of Afro-descendents in Latin America and the Caribbean. Type 2 diabetes is a common condition all over the world, and the Dominican Republic is no different. Diabetes management requires consistent access to health care, food access, access to reasonable movement and/or physical activity opportunities, and social support among others. Since 2015, we have conducted a longitudinal qualitative study to explore what the experiences of adults living with type 2 diabetes in rural areas in the Dominican Republic. We have further explored the mental and emotional health components of managing type 2 diabetes for adults, including barriers and buffering techniques. An ongoing project is to examine the role of diabetes-related stress and diabetes management for adults with type 2 diabetes who reside in rural areas who are seeking care.
